I’m Karien Barnes, a children’s book illustrator working primarily in gouache.

My illustrations begin as pencil sketches on paper and are painted by hand, allowing texture, warmth, and small imperfections to become part of the story.

I’m inspired by classic European fairy tales and illustrated books that feel personal, atmospheric, and timeless.

I work with a limited number of authors and publishers each year, choosing projects where craft and storytelling are valued over speed and trends.
